Nigerian actress, Tonto Dike recently announce her honour as the United Nations Noble International Ambassador for the United Nations Rescue Services on Wednesday, 7th March, 2021.
This announcement raised questions about whether this honorary ambassadorial award/appointment came from the United Nations or whether it’s even real?
United nations quickly react to Nigerian celebrity, Tonto Dike’s ‘United Nations Noble International Ambassador for the United Nations Rescue Services’ award.
Director of United Nations Information Centre for Nigeria, Ronald Kayanja confam told BBC News Pidgin the the award don’t have anything to do with the United nations and it’s illegal.
“This has got anything at all to do with the United Nations. A number of civil society organisations around the world have a way to participate in UN meetings of the Economic Social Council (ECOSOC) but that not mean they are members of the United Nations
“But they can participate and we give them what we call ‘consultative status’, meaning they got the opportunity to participate
“We are not sure if they – United nations Rescue Services- have any consultative status with the ECOSOC, but even if they have it does not make them the United Nations. The Award is fake and illegal,” this is what Ronald explained to BBC Pidgin.
Mr. Ronald also said no organisation have the rights to give awards and name it under the United nations.
“We have protocols that we follow to give the United Nations Awards or honours and this is not it.” he added.
What the organisation that gave Tonto Dike Award say?
BBC Pidgin followed the Global Chairman of the United Nations Rescue Service who honoured Tonto Dike with the “United Nations Noble International Ambassador”
Ambassador Steve Midalah explained to us that his organisation is one of the arms of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
“Our goal is to work on the eradication of poverty of Nigeria and for us government cannot do everything alone, so we decided to come in and see what we can do for our citizens

“We get initiative which we it call the United nations Noble Ambassador awards and we give this award to only people who identify their selves to use their knowledge, time and resources to serve humanity even though we don’t know them.”
Mr. Steve said because of this they decided to honor Tonto Dike for her humanitarian work.
“I have never met Tonto Dike before, but just because of the award I have followed her activities on social media, how she has reached out to people especially during the lockdown.
“People like this we want to identify to honour with the Nobel International Ambassador Awards.”
This is not the the first time the Nigerian actress has got herself involved in this scandal.
Truth is that, earlier this year the Nigerian actress claimed that she has gotten an appointment as the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission Ambassador of Peace.
The commission later came out to deny that they have not made Tonto Dike their Ambassador.
“This claim by her is spurious, unfounded and should be discarded and seen by all Nigerians as a figment of her imagination .”This is what NCPC said.
